The Escarpment Notebook

The first entry in the notebook is four words long. Rain late. Herds thin. It was written in pencil because ink ran in the short rains, and pencil survives a wet pocket the way a habit survives a hard season.

Fifty years later the same escarpment carries the same acacia line, and the same question underneath it: who is counted as a neighbour of the wild, and who is only counted as a visitor to it.
